promotion/tech tree questions

One of the things that I wasn't to do on my map is to have to choose between techs/promotions, and have some of them be mutually exclusive. I think I am going to have them all be activated like in the age of tribes map, as that allows me to have a set price, that doesn't have to be just PUs.
I have a couple of thoughts, but they seem overly complex. I am not sure that can be avoided for this though.
My current plan is to have the techs consume a unit that can't be rebuilt. So you get one of that unit, consume it placing a tech, and then you can't place the others that it is mutually exclusive with.
