Showing units of territory under cursor in bottom bar
-
Hello all,
I'm wondering what do people think of the following proposed feature:
- When you mouse over a territory, the bottom bar will show the units currently in that territory
I have a prototype of this feature implemented, but it needs a bit more work before it can actually be submitted. I want to get the community's opinions on whether this is worthwile.
Here's a screenshot - you don't see the mouse, but it's over territory 46 Se Zone which is the one right under Siam. (This is on Pacific Theater Solo Challenge). As you can see, on the map itself, it's not really possible to tell exactly what's going on there.
In the current engine, I usually resort to just bringing up the Battle Calculator to see the details, but if we showed the units in the bottom bar, that won't be necessary. I do realize there is also a territory info tab available on the right, however I tend not to use it - since often, showing my current undoable moves list is also useful.
One thing I still need to figure out is how the UI should behave under different circumstances - what size should be allocated to this element - whether it should be in place of the status message (that shows why a move can't be made), when no move is being made, or in addition - and how its width should interact with the other elements (e.g. should the territory name/income cell be fixed width or variable?) and in particular, what to do on smaller screens. Feedback welcome!

Experimenting a bit more, maybe having it in the same box as the territory name is a good approach:
