I am working on a scenario with limited combat rounds. I would like to prevent non-AA ground units from targeting bombers when attacked by bombers. However, if the non-AA ground are attacking, I don't want to have the bombers to be immune, turning bomber into invulnerable defenders of an area.

Is there any way to restricted targeting just on defense?

What about giving bombers a bonus on offense of -6 "high altitude" (or whatever) against 99 enemy units (ground units) for (however many) number of rounds? This would make them invulnerable to ground fire. I have not actually tried something like that, it is just a thought.

@andrewthree A negative support attachment would negate ground units under all circumstances, not just with purely air attack.

I am thinking about using the "AA" capability. I could attacking ground forces an AA-type attack that is negated by the presence of enemy ground forces.

I've been thinking about more custom firing groups than what is available with canNotTarget and canNotBeTargetedBy. I posted my ideas on the XML at https://forums.triplea-game.org/topic/2348/custom-firing-groups-for-units. Would that idea work for you?

@Trevan That looks like a good generalization of the AA rules.
