TripleA on Wikipedia under threat
-
Hi together, long time lurker here.
I registered as I noticed that currently the TripleA article on Wikipedia seems under the threat of being deleted.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TripleAThere is currently some discussion going on here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/TripleA_(2nd_nomination)
If I understand the process right, this is about "notability" which can be created by having high quality media (newspapers , TV, books, magazines) talking, discussing an reviewing the impact and importance of TripleA (or its content and maps). So, has someone in the community such a list of press material about the game? thank you
-
I think the folks at Wikipedia are well aware of the press sources you're talking about. Thankfully, at the moment, I don't think that we are relying as much on the Wikipedia page as our website is up and flourishing. If they are not yet aware of that, feel free to link it. We have a decent about page here: http://www.triplea-game.org/about/
In the past, we may have sullied our reputation at Wikipedia, though I'm not sure about all of that, having only skimmed those posts on the old forum. I say that we play by the rules and if we get deleted, we should work hard to meet their standards for notability not by just recreating the page. Maybe we need a publicity person who can get some high-level press and such who understands the requirements.

It would kind of be a shame for the wikipedia article to be deleted. Glad to help provide information or answer questions if the folks there have them. Most open source games don't get much press though. It would also be great for the wikipedia article itself to get some love.
Most of the reviews I'm aware of are old since TripleA has been around for a while but here are newer ones:

@redrum Hi redrum, yes such sources arehelpful. But looking at previous discussions, blogs and community created material seems to be a "no go". But on the other hand, old reviews are no problem at all, if from established high quality media, e.g. print magazines or big newspapers e.g. New York Times, Guardian or similar. Or big game magazines...or if some celebrity played or discussed TripleA...material like that.

bump ....

@prastle @anyone
no one has some more material? in which cover disks it was included which news paper wrote a review about it, in which exhibition/museum/school/university it was presented or used or mentioned... ?!?

@helsinkiharbour
sorry dude. The only time I've ever seen triplea mentioned was when i was looking axis and allies up on the net.
Although I think I remeber a ROTC guy on axis and allies.org wanting to use it as a teaching tool to his class. Would something like that help ? i can try and find it if you want.here's a link
haven't reread it yet so hopefully it helps : )
Well it doesn't really mention triplea so might not be of much help. You'd have to link the two together which is maybe not a good thing due to the past conflicts.

@beelee @helsinkiharbour We also had a teacher that wanted to use it for his classroom but the students all had chromebooks. I do not believe they were able to get it working.

@redrum thanks! I think 1 or 2 can be helpful....
Better backed user number could be helpful... do you track the downloads or installations or running online games or active players? -
@helsinkiharbour SourceForge used to track downloads for us: https://sourceforge.net/projects/triplea/files/stats/timeline?dates=2002-01-17+to+2017-01-01
I don't know if we have a download count on the new website or github.
I'd say there are a few hundred active multiplayer lobby players and probably a few hundred active PBF/PBEM players. To verify you can join the lobby and there is usually somewhere between 30-100 people in it. PBF/PBEM is mostly on A&A: http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?board=40.0. IMO, we probably have more people that play just singleplayer than both those combine so I'd say at a minimum we have 1000+ users that have played some form of TripleA in the past few months.
-
@redrum mass email was 6500 ish after last summers purge. Hopefully a few more like 2500 but guess we shall see.
-
@prastle just to throw in my 2 cents I know for sure that the harder a game is the smaller the games popularity is so don't compare this community with Runescape or World of Warcraft lol because a game like this one is more a niche/elite skilled type game for the smarter "lateral thinking" type of gamer amiright!
Even with first person view shooter games like Quake and Counterstrike you'd be lucky to hit several thousand regular players because again those games require more advanced gaming skills but my point is this game could only get so popular because its a more challenging type of game and I've discovered the communities for these challenging type of games are much smaller than most other games unfortunately but don't let that hold you back from trying to get this game super popular!
Elite game is elite!

@Captain-Crunch no worries but to explaiin better when warclub was purged 68000 were removed and now we have what we have. U are correct. i just hope some return
-
@redrum Regarding the download counts: the maps have 7 million downloads, the client 1.2 million via sourceforge. What is the interpretation?
And, while the sources seems now to be sufficient for the survival of the article, it would be nice if someone more knowledgeable with history and development of TripleA would expand the article in that respect, the article is underdeveloped currently.
-
@helsinkiharbour Its hard to say on the download counts given the number of bots out there these days. I find it a little hard to believe we have more than 1 million downloads by actual users but I guess its possible. I think the main point is that a decent percentage of the downloads should be real users so I have to imagine we have definitely over 100,000 downloads.
I agree that it would be nice to revamp the wikipedia article as a whole to add more information and make sure its up to date.
-
@redrum Let's assume the numbers are real (an I think they are real as other games on sourceforge of similar age and scope have signifiant smaller number), is the intpretation given on Wikipedia about the client and map downloads right?
the client was distributed not only from Sourceforge but also via various freeware downlaod sites and also linux distros.... but irregard where the client was from the map download numbers can be interpreted as number of full game installations -> 7million.
-
@helsinkiharbour well that number can be divided by about 7? or maybe more i would have to count the number of stable releases from old days but ya u get idea. Main pt is alot of people downloaded this alot.
-
@helsinkiharbour Well there are a couple hundred different maps. Most users probably never downloaded more than a few especially from SourceForge since back then the ~10 most popular maps were bundled with the TripleA client download. Map do get updated from time to time so some users would have repeat downloads of the same map just a newer version.
Most map downloads are from the TripleA game client itself as it used to reach out to SourceForge to download the maps for the user (now it does so from github). Its hard to say exactly what the 7 million map download number means in regards to number of full game installs and players.
