      @redrum Didn't know this move was supposed to be illegal. Air units can "land" over enemy territory, after all. The plan was to block the way and protect the three trolls. If I had known it, I wouldn't have tried to take out the boat and just sacrificed one bat. Can I ask you to

      • edit the bat to Fords of Bruinen, if this move should be legal
      • edit the bat to Fords of Bruinen, and edit yourself your swan_boat back (as if I had sent a bat there in CM, and hadn't attacked the boat)?

      Let the dead bat stay dead in either case, let's not incentivize making a habit of cancelling unfavourable battles.

          @alkexr Well, not many maps allow air units to land over water & enemy land. I'm not 100% sure what the general expectations are around the functionality but would probably defer to how the engine enforces it at the moment. The way I see it is that the engine prevents you from essentially attacking enemy territories during non-combat move. Otherwise you can do things like you tried to do here with fighting a battle and then landing in an enemy territory which is really attacking 2 territories in the same turn which feels kind of wrong.

          I'm fine with option 2 of editing especially cause we are just playing a balance game.

                            That 1 orc warg scout winning that battle @40% to block the attack on Sarumen is like a 150 TUV swing move. Definitely doesn't feel good on turn 1. Not sure if that is just an extremely risky move by Sarumen that is probably a bad idea or if the starting positions need tweaked. But that 1 battle to block it probably kept this game alive as otherwise I think Sarumen lost half of its units turn 1.

                            Also I think the placements for Helms Deep need fixed as it appears the first unit is invisible.

                              @redrum You made a mistake, and that evens out the mistake I made with Saruman. I think balance-wise we are roughly on the correct track. (You should have sacrificed a huorn to take Westfold, it was clearly important enough.)

                              If Saruman doesn't make a mistake and does the first turn roughly like this, then Evil has about 7% chance to fail both Saruman's and the Orcs' screening attempt.

                              But I agree, it should be made clear whether Saruman + Orcs should be allowed to do this. So either 2 dunlendings should be moved 1 territory closer (to allow Saruman to 100% do this) or 2 dunlendings should be moved 1 territory farther (to make this move impossible).

                                It's at (0,0), and hopefully the factory is displayed there.

                                EDIT: oh, I see it now. I wanted to switch to using the dont_display_unit instead of placement hack in the next version anyway.

                                  @alkexr Yeah, I didn't realize that the orc warg scout could get to Westfold. For some reason, I keep forgetting they can move through mountains as the other wargs can't and most cavalry can't. And agree that I should have used a Huorn as well though even with just the 2 elven cavalry, there was a pretty good chance of both of them surviving which would have prevented it as well. So both a missed move and 2 unlucky battles 😕

                                  So I guess your general thought is that Hornburg should fall to Saruman turn 2 given that they move most of their troops into position to attack it? Just trying to get a sense of where you think the balance lies.

                                    With the current starting position yes, Hornburg should fall turn 2 (without significant difference from the actual game).

                                      Well, at the cost of trading 4-ish uruk pikes or something, but taking them doesn't seem to be free (counterattacks etc.), so TUV-wise it should be close.

                                        @alkexr Yeah, that should prevent Lorien taking Westfold (could also use 2 Gondor rangers as well to make it like 15%) though I think then Rohan can actually get enough to defend Hornburg with Saruman having the 6 or so less units.

                                          @redrum Now I could counter-speculate what I would do differently, and if we keep counter-counter-speculating, we end up playing out a new game in the head. But in the end the two (interlinked) questions we have are:

                                          • Should we continue this game as is, or should we start over
                                          • Should we balance the map in a way that allows Saruman to take Hornburg turn 2 or not

                                            @alkexr Aye. I definitely think we should continue as even if Saruman/Rohan plays out a bit differently then it normally would, we can still test the rest of the map as I don't think there have been too many errors else where.

                                            We definitely do need to test Saruman's opening and counters to it a bit more though.
