How does the AI select casualties?

Question in the title ^
At first I thought the casualties were selected based on combat value but then I saw the AI deciding to lose 4:4 units while still having 1:1 units engaged... -
@loulou76100 on attack it uses attack value on defense it uses defense value if there is a tie it goes by TUV, then movement remaining

@ubernaut It seems that production cost is an important variable too.
The AI seems to prefer saving bad but costly units rather than good but cheap units. -

I think redrum explains some behavior there. I know he did somewhere, just cant remember exactly where at lol
