Movable unit Highlight, remove button, change to be a toggle
-
Following up on a few threads, want to create a dedicated/explicit one for unit highlight discussion and feedback.
Planning to:
- remove the unit highlight button from unit scroller
- add unit highlight toggle option to the view menu
- unit highlight becomes an on/off toggle. Before it was a highlight that lasted a few seconds.
- change the hotkey from 'f' to perhaps 'ctrl+g' (all letters in highlight are already behind a hotkey)
- change 'show game' hotkey from 'ctrl+g' to 'ctrl+h' (this would make show history a toggle, 'ctrl+h' once to get into history mode, again to exit history mode). This is to free up the 'g' key, but also I think having 'ctrl+h' to turn on/off history mode is the right thing as well.

Having ctrl+h toggle history mode on/off is actually not simple. There is a lot of coordination code to turn history on, turning it on/off rapidly easily produces errors. These are not trivial to sort through. I'm not sure which ctrl+letter combination we could use for 'highlight'. The menu options only take 'ctrl+letter' combination, the reason we can get rid of the highlight icon is if we can get the hotkey to be labeled somewhere, in menu being a good place.

I think that there might be made more interest in regards to the unit scroller buttons and the unit highlight feature if there were some actual updates that could be tested out.
Am I wrong when saying that the scroller has not changed at all in the pre-releases? (I think it looks the same as always) There has been a alot of ideas presented and feedback, but as people don't use the current scroller, I think feedback will be very sparse.
I also think that most people (not including me ) would not want to play with the current scroller as it takes up vast amount of screen space. Before people are qualified to comment on removal or function of highlight buttons, they should actually use the scroller during play.

These two statements seem to contradict each other:
Before people are qualified to comment on removal or function of highlight buttons, they should actually use the scroller during play.
I think that there might be made more interest in regards to the unit scroller buttons and the unit highlight feature if there were some actual updates that could be tested out.
You're right though there have not been too many updates. The focus has been on 2.0 infrastructure and bug fixes to enable the launch. Still a WIP as we have some issues to hammer out. In the meantime, the window for feedback is still open. Considering it's about 5-10 hours of work to do the remaining unit scroller work, spending an hour or two to discuss what needs to happen now is much preferable compared to the work being redone.

@LaFayette Here was some feedback on the unit scroller in the pre-release: https://forums.triplea-game.org/topic/105/ai-development-discussion-and-feedback/204
Oh, with the UI, when you are doing combat moves ... if you want to say move a Tank and then you change your mind and want to click "Undo Move" well that whole area used to be big but its now blocked by those fast buttons below and I tried the only 3 resolutions on my comp that I can and the Combat area is always so small I can barely scroll to the "Undo Move" button and its much slower than when it was a whole big nice area to click on so my question is can I click off those fast button things below the Combat window so I can see the Combat window better since I don't even use those Fast buttons things I've never seen before
