Rule clarification for Carrier combat and landing planes
-
Hey.
Im always confused about this since there are so many variations:
Imagine that yellow eclipse is a carrier and the two orange squares planes. They both move 3 moves in either direction on combat. Now the carrier could save either plane but it cant save both. Is this ever a legal move?
-
Its always a legal move/never a legal move.

On some rule variations (what maps?) there is this thing that you count on the worst possible outcome in Low Luck for the rule to be enforceable. Imagine we're playing Low Luck and a plane is guaranteed to be a possible casualty in one of those two spots. Meaning I can pick a plane as a casualty 100% of the time and save say the other plane by moving the carrier to it.
Is it then a legal move even when its not normally.

@ondis since kamikaze planes are not allowed, in theory you need a viable place to land all aircraft. now that doesnt mean you have to move a carrier during the combat phase, so if your plane is killed you can move your carrier any where you want.
-
@silverbullet Okay but what if in theory I know one plane will die and will thus not be kamikaze and I can 100% pick up any planes that remain?
-
@ondis no, you cant assume a plane will die, even if you know it will because of playing low luck, you have to treat it as a dice game i guess and you must have a viable place to land for all aircraft before getting to the combat phase.

I have a memory of that some ruleset, at least for every other case except this, would allow you to make moves with the assumption of 100% events in LL if playing LL.
And that it was fairly common. Anyone else that can chip in and maybe clarify?

@ondis The above move is definitely illegal in Revised rules. Not sure about LHTR or any other ruleset, unless they specifically allow kamikaze airplanes (which that is).
The one thing that you might be thinking of is that if an AC is needed for landing, then it must have a >0% chance of reaching the proper destination. In dice games, it is always >0%, even if it's .0000000001%. But in LL, it can be 0%, in which case that type of move would not be legal.

My example is a bit more concerned with the opposite, where a CV is =100% able to pick up the plane after combat but not before.
Me and Bayder and Rumrem had a few examples run in a bot.
I think we came to these conclusions, correct me if I'm wrong:
Any move that is 100% guaranteed to be possible after combat in LL is a legal move with the exception of where this results depends on picking planes as casualties as that would be kamikaze planes.
I think I was a bit confused by the nature of the above example in the OP as it splits 2 planes from a carrier that can theoretically hold both of them. But one of them incidentally has to become a kamikaze plane, the mental conundrum now could be deciding which But thats a whole other thought experiment.
