Revised Tournament of Champions (ToC 14) -- St. Nazaire Raiders !!
-
Barca (Allies) defeats LouisXIVXIV (Axis +8) in a match that lasted 37 rounds and was a continuation of our ToC13 matchup. This was an epic game, a battle of David and Goliath, with the undefeated reigning ToC13 champion playing the axis.
Allied play style centered on dominating Total Unit Value (TUV). IPC advantage was the top priority at all times. The allies received more IPCs per turn in every round. No pitched battles were fought, all confrontations were limited to small units trying to edge out positional advantages.
Controlling Africa in the early and middle rounds was critical for the Allies. The allied plan was to use Africa as a spring board. There were three primary reasons for this,- Controlling Africa early helps to ensure the IPC income advantage
- Allied troops in northern Africa forces Germany to keep defense troops in Europe, which in turn alleviates pressure on Russia.
- The end goal was the resource rich Asia mainland and pacific islands. The breakaway for the allies occurred in round 21 and ended in round 34 with the Americans taking all of Asia and the pacific islands. This was no simple accomplishment. Axis and Allied strength was nearly equal at the point of contact. An allied maneuver seized the initiative by creating multiple pressure points which included a direct attack on Japan itself (Round 28). Japan responded by diverting resources (infantry and fighters) to defend its homeland which weakened both its Army and Navy. At this point the Japanese military was left with two bad options; annihilation or retreat. Choosing the latter, America consumed nearly all of Japan’s territory uncontested in quick succession. The bi-product of an effective divide and conquer strategy. Henceforth, Japan was relegated to a minor power with little usable IPC income.
While the Americans and Japanese were fighting it out in the Pacific, Germany was growing stronger and needed to be contained so they could not take Russia. To do this England was tasked with fighting Germany in all Dead Zones. This allowed Russia to preserve its manpower so that it could contest Germany in a counter attack. In addition, Germany was forced to control its Victory Cities (VCs), because with the Pacific lost the threat of the Allies taking 9 VCs (a winning condition) was real. This diverted much needed resources from the eastern front.
The coup de grace came in round 37 with the Allies focusing all of their attention on Germany. With their fate sealed the Axis powers resigned.
I want to thank LouisXIVXIV for being a good sport. He had the option to continue our game from ToC13 (starting in round 21, where the Allies probably had a slight lead) or start a new one. If winning was all the mattered he probably would have chosen to start a new game. Mutual respect and a love for the game prevailed. I wish him all the best in ToC14 and hope our paths meet again.

LouisXIVXIV (Axis +8) defeats FrankTheTank in a quickly played pbem game of 12 rounds.
This was an allied KJF-type game, with an eye toward a USA battleship strategy. Unfortunately for allies, Japan was able to maintain something of a stalemate, while Germany steadily became TUV overgrown with little opposition, as often happens in a KJ. Then it finally had too much for Russia to cork and the allies fell. The post-Russia endgame would have been fun to play as the defenders careened into Asia and USA got its battleships underway, but Axis captured 9vc, ending things prematurely. Next VC target would have been UK, so allied operations in the pac would have been under the gun... I should also add - Axis got lucky! Just seemed to have the dice going my way for the all important first 6 rounds.
Good game FrankTheTank!

Frank-the-Tank (Allies) vs. LouisXIVXIV (Axis bid8): Despite a very good start for Allies (UK and USA in Pacific), Axis managed a great defensive game with both Germany and Japan. Germany built tons of troops and eventually took Russia while Japan resisted USA build up. Game was decided with the VC9 rule which I really hate, but nonetheless territory and PU advantage was too much for Allies to reverse over time. Well done LouisXIVXIV!

Barca defeats the Wasp (Axis +9) after 14 rounds of play. The game opened with the German bid being placed mostly in Europe. This elicited a classic defensive start for the allies. Good pressure from the Axis followed. The gamed ended with multiple pitched battles in the sea zones around the Suez cannel. 33% of the TUV came off the board in just 3 turns (England hit first, Japan countered, America finished). Fortunately for me, my dice were red hot and the axis were rolling bricks. Anything less and the outcome of this game would have been different.
I want to thank the Wasp for a good game and a pleasant experience.

LouisXIVXIV defeats Comorv (Axis +7). This game was played live in under 3 hours, of which I used most of that time. Ended in round 3, with Comorv frustrated by his run of luck in small combats. GG Comorv, and thanks for the rules enlightenment from before the game.

jmpsmsh (+9) defeats Blasherke after 10 rounds of PBEM. Whoever attacked in the first two rounds somehow had to face really bad dice, resulting in a lot of fighters going down on both sides early. The Allies took advantage by stacking up mass infantry in WE and later SE and thus forced Germany into defensive play. Russia, however, could never really recover and was slowly overrun by Japan.
Thanks Blasherke for an interesting and well played game. -
polarole allies defeats epinikion axis+10 with axis surrendering after russia 15.
it was a pleasant fight as usual and very close for a long time. allies moved forces into weu and stacked there, those forces could be attacked succesfully and the battle went quite good for axis but german attrition was high. afterwards japs had a really unlucky round which turned out to be very decisive for the rest of the game.
nice game looking forward to play epinikion again...
bye polarole -
epis allies defeated eboys axis (+9bid) in a fast online and well played game. Both axis builded big tank stacks, but defence of moscow was stable and allies at tuv and income ahead. file attachedeboy.tsvg .

polarole allies defeats barca axis+9
allies had a good start with germans losing a fgt early. axis decided to play it superpassivly with germans as well as japan. so russia got an unopposed march into german territory and allies were able to stack eeu Rus 4 which decided the game.
in Ger6 axis surrendered with germans basicaly out of the game and japs not threatening anything.
thanks for playing
bye polarole -
LouisXIVXIV (Axis +8 ) defeats Ingcameroni. Mainly a pbem game. We switched to live to speed things up near the deadline and it ended after about one round of live play. Neither of us wanted to play rushed and it probably led to a premature finish.
Let's see... here are some thoughts: This was a close game. Allies had income and TUV advantage all game. Germany opened with a bomber buy and allies were risk-taking with ships which led to a number of German air hits on boats. Overall this may have helped him more than hurt him as it turned out, but things were going to be tight for him if Japans air-force got into the European theater. Germany chose not to attack many times in Europe for lack of air, but USA was 5 transports behind. Allies opened with a KGF overall but maximally slowed Japan in Borneo, etc. Allies purchased an enormous number of fighters - this got them involved quickly with a lot of flexibility, and long term may have pinched Js naval moves. My counter-strategy narrative was to push land units into attack positions so that his total defensive power would be called upon and be insufficient. A lot of focus on Africa. I tried to be particularly efficient with Japan because Germany was pretty corked up and Japan had a weak start. It was a challenging game! I felt I had taken the upper hand on the board with a push into ukraine just before things fell off a cliff.
The game ended strangely and abruptly in round 10. Allies attempted a "technical maneuver" of dropping a transport into 34 to prevent an amphibious attack in the suez. However, in fact this did not prevent me from loading in india and attacking anyway. Having planned his moves around this idea Allies threw in the towel once persuaded of the rules and the disastrous consequences were apparent. Kind of a shoddy end to a very solid game. To his credit, Ingcameroni insisted on resigning instead of replaying prior moves based on a new understanding of the rules, even though that was offered. At the tourney level, you could argue you have to know the rules... [though many rules are controversial, I believe this situation was beyond contestation.] I'm pretty sure that I would not have been able to pick up units from Persia in the final scenario, but India worked...
Anyway, good game!
The last save I had was from just before his UK play. Basically he places a transport in 34 and all the other UK guys leave the suez area...

bayder (Axis) defeats polarole (Allies) in round 8 of a pbem game using standard ToC rules. Axis were the beneficiaries of early good luck, which helped Japan stack Per in round 4. Allies were successful in several risky attacks to get themselves back into contention, but in round 8 with Germany stacking Ukr and Japan stacking Per, the Allies decided to surrender.
As always, polarole was a fun, gracious, and challenging opponent. I look forward to playing him again, we have always had great games in the past. Cheers! bayder

LouisXIVXIV (Axis +9) defeats Barca. Resignation in round 11. This resignation regarded insufficient play time in the last few days before adjudication would have kicked in. How would YOU have adjudicated?
TOC14 LouisXIVXIV-Barca#2 USSR Round 11
This is a REAL LUCK game with TECH. USA and UK both have rockets.
The game was played exclusively pbem. Lots of weak dice in the first round. Japan rolled at less than 1/1000 in round 1, if I recall, just after UK rolled at 1/100. Overall, I think dice favored the allies.
The situation of the game now is one where Axis are shaping up to have an income advantage via territory that is nullified by allied rocket power, bringing things very close to even economically, perhaps ~3 IPC for allies in the short to medium term. TUV is 1182 allies -1056 axis.
Before I articulate who I think is winning and why, I'm curious to know what other people think.
-
i say the rockets make the difference. i cant see that axis can hold an income advantage with this tech on allies side. Isn`t it 5 rocket rolls per round (against germ and south europe twice plus one vs india)? How will axis compensate that?
epi

@epinikion It's 6 -- average 7 ipc against germ via UK and 7 via USA. then avg 5 vs Japan via UK for a total average damage of 19/round. However, I anticipate a net axis income advantage of ~16/round. (India and FIC)
