World War I European Campaigns
-
Hello everyone,
I am making a new World War I map that will be bigger and better than ever before! Here is a sample picture (I had to shrink it to upload):
Please forgive the flags which need to be centered.
Any help or feedback would be appreciated!
-
@iratoric Hi. Thanks for the project. First impressions/suggestions;
-
USA-France distance should be equal to Canada-France distance because otherwise USA would constantly need to move its troops to Canada to later transport them to Europe to optimize their movements. And it is kinda chore because just setting 5 sea zone between USA-France would be way easier to manage.
-
I think USA should have more options. The alternatives are adding Mexico-Caribbeans, Having Germany capable of spamming subs in the middle Atlantic, simulating USA home front or giving some ways to intervene the Russian Civil war if there will be the Communists.
-
I would suggest going back old Sea Zone colour.
-
I think territory sizes should become more closer each other. For example Bulgaria shouldn't really be just one territory when Congress Poland consist of 10 territories.
-
Aesthetically, I would give Belgium to France, add Serbia (Serbia+Montenegro+Albania+Greece), give Bulgaria to Ottomans (or create Bulgaria) and make Romania either neutral (not impassable) or new state. And making Moscow capital of Russia.
-
I would create a small German territory in the Middle East (I've given Jabal Shammar to Germany in my map) giving Germany ability of reinforcing the Middle East.
-
I would make Persia neutral.
-
Southern part of Central Asia can be neutral too since Russia didn't have actually full control in here.
-
I think you should extend the map eastward to cover at least part of India. Communists might be good addition too.
-
-
@iratoric Why have North America at all? Unless you give transports a high movement allowance, it will be time-consuming and annoying to play the US.
-
So many questions to answer right off the bat! I will have to come back and answer them later as I am short on time right now.
A clarification: the United States will have to fight U-boats on its way across the Atlantic so they will be doing something the whole time. I am tired of drawing for now so I am going to keep the borders as they are. Other things like ownership of minor nations I might change.
Here is an idea for a trench unit I had for the Western Front:
It is an infantry unit poking out of a trench shooting through barbed wire. I think it looks cool. Tell me what you think!
-
@iratoric I actually came up with a better image for a trench:
The trench unit cannot move, attack, or defend, but it provides a bonus of 1 to all defending infantry. -
all cool, i love ww1 era, history and games. i would love to see "lawrence of arabia" sort of like "chuck norris" in the map "zombieland", he rolls 5 attack dice!
-
@silverbullet Lawrence of Arabia was a real person. I would just give him the ability to grant a movement bonus and a +1 on attack.
-
@silverbullet Here is a possible unit image for Lawrence of Arabia:
It is supposed to be him riding a camel and raising his sword. I think it looks pretty epic! He could be a tactician that gives a bonus to allied units with him. Other prominent people could be included too, like the Red Baron or Hindenburg. -
Germany could have Wassmuss of Persia too, the German equivalent of Lawrence of Arabia.
-
If folks are interested I can post my own World War I map I made this week. Wasn't satisfied with the global maps considering the war is pretty much exclusively a European conflict.
Two issues with the map though.
1.) One issue of course is that the US is excluded. Might include a tech-based resource boost to England to balance this over time.
2.) Decided not to make tanks a technology and are instead only available for Germany, France, and the UK. Not all units are available for all countries - namely because many of the southern and eastern powers lacked the industrial capacity.
-
-
It is perfectly fine not having USA since they usually end up with lack of options other than reinforcing N.France if it isn't World Map.
-
I think all major powers except the Ottomans had industrial capacity to produce tanks just they didn't prefer to invest them much due to seeveral reasons. Same as Germany which produced only 20 tanks during the war. But it would be weird to see every nations capable of producing tanks but the Ottomans.
I would also suggest reconsidering some drawings;
-
It should be easier for Germany to reach Paris via Belgium rather than via Alsace. If Rhineland-Paris distance will remain 3 then Alsace-Paris distance should be 3 too. To enable it Paris might need to be move to westward.
-
Give part of the Netherlands to Belgium to have more space for troops.
-
Better to remove disputable connections like it is currently not clear if Upper Silesia touch Western Poland or not.
-
France needs Provence Factory.
-
I would give control of Belgium to France and remove Luxembourg.
-
I would reconsider color of all nations except France.
-
If the game has no Caucasus and the Middle Eastern fronts then it is better to have Bulgaria instead of the Ottomans.
-
Austria should have Slovenian factory.
-
Vojvodina sould be renamed as Belgrade.
-
-
@unit332 I think you would make a new topic about it.
-
You don't use tech for a resource boost, you can just a national objective which is easier to write.
You could also use a recurring event to place units for the United States.
-
@schulz Excellent suggestions! This was primarily a test run to see what method of map making was best. It may take a while to make changes I think what you've offered are solid ones.
-
@cernel I will do so when I have more to offer. Thanks for the heads up.
-
I wonder which programs do you guys use to draw your maps? I use only paint but would want to learn especially how to make realistic outlines?
For example in here I've purposely shrinked non-European territories and Oceans to avoid possible crashes but outlines don't look very good unfortunately.
-
@schulz I think this should rather be posted outside of this topic and this section of the forum as well. I understand this topic has been made specifically for the "World War I European Campaigns" map, and map non-specific matters are for the "Mapmaking" section anyways.
-
@schulz Here is a possible unit image for Wassmuss of Persia:
Similarly to Lawrence of Arabia, he would give a bonus to allied units with him. Whereas Lawrence of Arabia would be in Hejaz fighting the Ottomans, Lawrence of Arabia would be in Persia fighting the British. I would picture them both having a small entourage of troops with them as they rarely operated alone. Also, I do not know how others create maps, but for this latest map I used Photoshop CS2. I cropped a world map to get an image of Europe and an image of America, then placed them closer together. I then traced over them and colored in the water. For detailed territories I looked up regional maps of each area and if the territories were too small I would combine two or more together so that I could fit units in them.
One thing you have to be careful with is that the lines must be completely black and there can be no gaps, otherwise TripleA won't register the territories properly. This gets particularly hard to do with large maps.
For this game, I have been thinking of doing a 1914 start date and that other countries will gradually join the war. Forts will be a new unit like bunkers in other games.
I have done some AI games and it looks like if there are forts on the French-German border, the German AI will turn away to avoid them and instead attack through Belgium, which is close to what happened historically.
