Option for Anniversary rules for escorts and intercepts
-
The current implementation of the fighter escorts and intercepts follows the rules laid out for Global/1942.2, but the implementation in the Anniversary Edition rule book is a bit different. There are four key differences:
- Anti-aircraft fires before the air battle
- Fighter escorts are susceptible to that AA
- Bombers do not roll a die
- Defending fighters get to fire even if they took a hit
Would it be possible to implement this altered ruleset for WWIIv3 maps?

Hi pete
Not entirely sure what you're asking but I think the answer is no. Triplea can't do it. We'll ask @wc_sumpton in case I'm mistaken

I have not checked the way how TripleA handles the optional rule for escorts and interceptors in this specific map right now, but I seem to recall that it never had been strictly accoring to the FAQ-sheets issued from 2008 on. Now with the current reprint the procedure has made it to the rulebook however - still as an optional rule.
However there are some small inaccuracies in your list:
- Fighter escorts are susceptible to that AA
Actually all attacking air units are subject to AA-fire.
- Defending fighters get to fire even if they took a hit
Just to be precise: This applies only to hits taken in the air fight, not to hits taken from the AA-gun (which eliminates the plane immediately).

@pizzapete Beside the fact that point 4 is not a difference (because defending fighters get to fire back in both rules-sets) and that you are missing some other differences (for example, in V3 interceptors roll at 2 and in Global at 1, and bombers make two additional damage each in Global), as of now it is just not possible properly to play V3 with Escorts and Iterceptors. What the basic game gives is the Global version without the +2 damage for bombers and with Jet tech active only for escorts (and I guess that this last one is a bug).
The solution is not to use that option.
I think this problem has got up in priority since it has been made part of the main rules albeit as an option. It is now on par with objectives or tech being broken for V3. If there is any developer who is seriously determined to fix this problem, I can give more information on what needs to be done (and I guess @Panther would be on the information team too). Ideally, rather better to test it on "WWIIv3 1941 Move-Buy-Move", which is closer to the intended behaviour already and has what's needed to be changed in the XML already done.
@Panther That is a list of differences: he/she says "fighter escorts" because the bombers get shot in both so no difference there.
Defending fighters can never be hit by AA, so no need to be that precise. "Defending fighters" means "interceptors".

This is not a Feature Request: this is a Problem.

My question would be "Why?"
When I try to fix a "problem" it is never implemented. Even when there is testing to verify the "fix". My biggest "pet peeve": What dose "number" mean in supportAttachment, it does not mean "how many units to be supported" as the PoS2 states.
My 2cents, sorry @Cernel I do not mean to get mad at you, seeing these "this needs to be changed" topics get under my skin as of lately.
Cheers...

@wc_sumpton I guess then we would need at least a developer able to merge. Is there a way to know or visualize the list of them all?
I do know that @LaFayette is one, but I'm not sure who else.
I think this should be a fairly easy fix. The main thing is to decide how to allow putting the AA fire before the air battle, then a lot of the changes would be just on the XML (like increasing interceptor roll to 2, which is already possible and already done in "WWIIv3 1941 Move-Buy-Move" and two other variants at least). Maybe adding the fighters as targets would be already possible by making them into bombers which make 0 damage, but I would rather do it in a more proper way.

For arguments sake, let's say that adding AA fire to the SBR is not that hard. What happens to them after the battle? Can they still participate in first round against attacking air? I did this already with a game option "Use Non-Air SBR Units In Normal Battle".
Cheers...

@wc_sumpton Yes, they can (in case the territory is both raided and attacked normally).
Starting from basic V3, it's the same except that you add an air battle in between of the AA fire against raiders and the bombing of the raiders and you add the escort fighters to the whole thing just as if they are bombers too but rolling no dice for bombing and requiring at least one bomber to be present as such.
Starting from Global 2nd, it's the same except that you put the AA fire before the air battle, target escort fighters too and the AA fire has to come from the AA guns rather than the target of the bombing raid itself (and I assume that this last difference is already supported).
All these beside the changes which will have to be done at the game file (XML) level, which I guess will comprise at least one property for having this behaviour. About the property, I guess it will have to default to the Global behaviour (to avoid messing up all Global-like games) even tough the V3 one maybe existed before, and should have therefore been the default had it been done in time.
@Panther Do you know which one existed before the other one between the V3 rules for escorts and interceptors and the first Global game having air battles before bombing raids? I'm guessing V3, but I'm not talking about V3 itself (because this rule is not OoB, so it came later than V3 itself).

However, I defer to @Panther for any actual answers about what happens when a territory is both raided and attacked normally with air units during the same turn. This happens very rarely in practice.
