So I came across the XML and code for upkeep costs for relationships:

upkeepCost values: "default", or any valid integer, or "percentage" with a count of a valid integer. Default = zero (0). This determines if there is a cost to maintain a relationship, which would be subtracted from PUs gained at end of turn.
      examples: a cost of 1 PU per turn: <option name="upkeepCost" value="1"/> or <option name="upkeepCost" value="flat" count="1"/>, or a cost of 9% of your income per turn: <option name="upkeepCost" value="percentage" count="9"/>

Are there any maps that use this?

Can't answer the question, but if the option works, it seems like a neat one. I would possibly use it in a future map.

@frostion I wonder if this is what @General_Zod was using to give upkeep costs to the dragons in your dragon wars map?

If I remember correctly, this was added as an idea to help fix the stacking problem in free for all games. The goal was if you were at peace with someone, you had to pay upkeep. That way peace had a cost, the same way that losing units had a cost for the players who were fighting.

I don't think it works at in practice. And you could also do the same thing with triggers.

@crazyg Yeah, that appears to be the case. The only place I saw it added to at one point was Napoleonic Empires FFA but looks like it was removed.

                @redrum Isn't it in ZOD's badass FFA?

@redrum Yes I use this in my Bad-Ass 4-Nation FFA. I use two forms of costs, one upkeep for both nations if accepted (and each turn as long as active) and a one time charge for the nation initiating the diplomatic overture.

@prastle I use a different upkeep for the dragons charging the nations food to feed the dragons.

@frostion I do have a mod for your Dragon War, just never quite completed it. Actually forgot about it for several months. Eventually I was gonna fill you in on it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Interesting about the food upkeep cost for Dragons. Good idea. I wonder why I didn't implement it. ๐Ÿ˜Š Would be nice to see the "mod" one day.

@frostion Yeah we can compare notes on it. @Prastle and I played DW for a while last year so we can both help ya on improvements.

My mod may have went a bit too far. I converted it to d20 as an experiment to try and get a d&d feel going. But that's were I left it. I never actually tested since.

Also I was leaning toward a 3 way FFA with alliances.

@frostion The food upkeep for dragons causes nations to decide, dragons and a small standing army or none and a large standing army.

Because I made dragons very hungry :()

@General_Zod If you post the XML there is an "Official" Dragon War thread here at the new forum. I don't know about breaking up the alliances and converting to d20 though. But who knows ๐Ÿ˜‰

@hepps Sure were they can. But dragons are so powerful, I thought they needed a counter balance element.

@frostion we really enjoyed the map only 2 major issues we found were:

                                        • Dragons were way to predictable.

                                        • It was almost impossible for the east to help the west without a southwest passage for the elves to the inner sea? or a gate? Similar prob with the north.
