Middle Earth: Battle For Arda - Official Thread

@hepps Wow.
-
Now you are going to have to stretch those hamstrings for unit drawing.
-
Was taking a stroll last night through the Civ Fanatics forum...
Probably all the resources you need to change all the units to more detailed versions is there if you want. Here is an example of what I did quickly with just 2 of the units I found there...
-
@hepps I declare that ugly-looking hobbit a strawman. (Straw-Hobbit. Whatever.) Most units really aren't that bad, especially after some kyu-level graphicsmancy. It feels good to move them around, and they don't feel out of place.

@alkexr Here is a little ditty for the Fire of Orthanc....
-
@alkexr Also do you want formal flags for each of the nations?
I started doodling... but I will only continue if you want them.
-
@hepps Unsure. That's another thing players have to learn. But I can see you used player colors, so I guess it won't be that difficult. (As if I took the same argument into consideration when creating 50 different units with wildly different ability sets... yeah.)
-
@alkexr Well many of them will be simply made up since there are few real references to any kind of banners or flags for most of them.
But yes the intention was to use the nation colours you have already selected.
Feel free to make suggestions if there are symbols that you would like to see.
-
@hepps We know that the banner of Harad contained serpents. And the flag of Dol Amroth contained swans. Too bad they aren't a player... Beyond that, I know of no flag referenced in canon. But there are iconic things for several players that could be symbolized: Rhun - wainriders; Orcs - the balrog, fire and shadow; Lorien - golden trees; Free Folk - well, pipe weed I guess
-
@alkexr Left the Long Leaf reign over them all!
-
@alkexr Here is the progress...
-
Almost done...
When I designed the Rhun symbol I kinda steered away from the original bright pink (No nation should ever be bright pink in my view unless you are designing a "Hello Kitty" game)
He is a quick mock up of the before and after if you were to tone down the Rhun colour.
Before...
After...
The only other thing I would suggest... is switching the purples between Isengard and Dol Guldur. There is far more opportunity for Dol Guldor and Moria to interact and have units sharing the same territories. It might be nice for their units to have more colour differentiation than the current setup. At the same time making Isengard the darker shade posses no issues to the game since all of the surrounding colours are significantly different.
-
@hepps I said I'd been tweaking colors. Pink is probably the last color I consider, but there are too many players to be choosy. Okay, maybe pink is still better than the now obsolete blinding Dale-yellow. Currently Rhun looks like...
As for Saruman and Dol Guldur, I would be much more afraid of the Saruman-purple and the Rhun-pink next to each other than Saruman-purple and Orc-red. To me those two colors appear perfectly and easily distinguishable. But then I will pull them apart a little bit.
-
@alkexr All good. At the end of the day I am just making suggestions and offering options. Once the game is in the repository... who knows what my version will end up looking like.
Here is a before and after mock up of the entire screen.
-
Oh and all the Flags are done now.
-
@hepps Is that reference to the Two Trees intentional? I like it.
And the reference to the seven clans, with the brightest being the Longbeards? Nice and deep symbolism. Will you send the (small and medium) flags over as separate images along with the map fixes whenever you are finished with them?
-
@alkexr Just finished the flag folder now.
Where do you stand on a Legend for the bottom left corner of the map?

-
@hepps Flags look really cool. Only thing that jumps out is that Angmar and Orcs are a bit similar in color/style.
-
@hepps Don't hold yourself back with the Legend until you run out of space. But don't spend too much time designing a unit ability list or something, at least not until units are finalized. Which will be soon.
