@rogercooper @rogercooper I've been playing the Viking game for a few days. The thing that irritated me the most was the monks. The computer players would just buy tons of monks. I fixed this by making monks cost 2, defend at zero and only move one space. So all they are good for is support and fodder. I made 3 factions, Geats with Northumbia, Danes with Picts, and Jutes united with Mercia and Wessex. I gave the Jutes +1 resource PUs every turn. I took the Geats faction and set the computer players to fast AI except for the Picts which I set at easy AI. This way no matter which faction you play you will get to use both sets of armies. I tried to change the names of the countries but I failed at that. I also tried to make villages defend at +1 support but failed at that as well. I have not play tested very far into the game yet so I'm not sure about the balance. I am not sure if I have the latest version. I barely managed to find and download the zip file called Viking-master. Then it would not load from the zip file so I had to move some files. I saw one version somewhere That was called Viking2 but the download file for it was gone. But anyhow I am having fun, the big kid and the history buff in me is still going strong.

@ted-self Now I am laughing at myself. I found the Viking2 file, now I have both versions. I just had to tweak it, I'm a tweaker. I screwed the monks and made the dogs cost 2 for 5 PUs. Got rid of the limit of 6 units and changed them all to either 8, 10 or 12. I would like to put names on the capital cities that are visible and also make the capitals be artillery, if you could tell me how to do that I would appreciate it. Of course I already appreciate the games you have made. Triplea is a great thing for old gamers and history buffs with not much disposable income.

There is always room for a Viking3 mod. If you want artillery in capitals, just create a zero move unit and place in the capital. Take a look at a scenario that has capitals, I believe that file is called capitals.txt. Post on the map-making forum if you need some help.

I enjoy this thread a lot. It's fun to hear the quick take and to see the images, especially to see how the various maps have been adapted for alternative scenarios. If there's one thing tripleA definitely has that I dig, it's the full buffet. Sometimes it can be hard to wade through so many different games and think what to download and try out, so the brief survey here is fun. Especially with the screens to show how things look. It's also cool I think just to see the various visual conventions there, like what colors and such were chosen.
I find that the more visuals there are available, the more inclined I am to explore the game and check it out. Even in the map downloads feature like the built in, like if there are more images beyond the thumbnail of the entire map at max zoom. Or when it displays a gamenotes with extra images and kinda tease what's what. A cool expanded overview/survey with this same method, might be like screen of the first turn purchase menu too, to see an example of the unit spread.
Reading this made me go and download some things I hadn't seen before and a few I'd seen but forgotten about. Trying to get a little archive going on the D drive now hehe.
Anyhow, good work!
