I recently got the new Axis and Allies 1942 on steam and was rather dissapointed to be honest, despite the shiny way it presents itself TripleA offers more for less in terms of games and replayability as a result.

This really should be hosted on steam in my opinion, other free open source games have done so in the past and acquired larger new fanbases as a result (OpenTD for example).

TripleA is a genuine hidden gem that more should know about.

That is a great pity, I am not much of a programme so unfamiliar if it has potential or not.
Why does Java specifically prove a problem?

Looks like it's feasable, see Java games on steam, and therefore from the technical side of things more a question of who volunteers?

How is it from the community side? Any reservations against go on Steam?

This was one of the long term goals for TripleA. We had a discussion probably a year or 2 ago and decided to try to make a few improvements especially from a UI perspective before going through the process of trying to get it added on steam. Unfortunately, that work kind of stalled out and so revisiting that discussion would probably be a good idea.

                  Some thoughts:

                  • Personally I would not want to install another bloaty (Steam) client just to be able to use TripleA. But as long as TripleA will be kept as an independently installable software I would not object.

                  • Concerning the user base: I have no idea if and how the user base would enlarge. But if it did it would mean, that the need for support and explanation would increase, too. Now who will cover that? Who will monitor Steam-forums and maybe Discord-channels?
On A&A .org, the PBF-base of a remarkable user-base, it is basically me as a one-man-show who helps users with troubleshooting in case of software problems on their side.
And I must admit that - at least since 2.6 - development - this "job" has become harder for me as 'improvements' of the software to me have become more and more unclear. Not a complaint - just a remark that giving support to me becomes harder and harder, too. I am not sure how long I will be willing to continue this.

Before thinking of enlarging the user base by using one of the popular game distribution sites one should reflect what is feasible not only concerning the possible consequences - but also concerning the current lineup, too.

Don't always trust TripleA when it comes to rules questions. Know the rules before you start … and better check what TripleA has done.
