new mod - domination 1902
-
Submitted a pull request for my first mod.
It's basically 1901 domination (a 1v1v1 map) but with more units. Some of the new units' colors aren't quite right, maybe I'll find some time to learn how to color units. Let me know what you think

Hi @luhhlz
@Black_Elk explains how to colorize with gimp here
https://forums.triplea-game.org/topic/3435/a-brief-guide-to-making-units-colorize-re-scale-etc
I do not see your pull request. Please link it.
Edit
yea, the above link takes me to the domination repo. Not your new one -

@luhhlz
Is this the real path? -

Is this the real path? That's the path to @luhhlz working directory, there is also TripleA Directory path, which shows the pull request.
Cheers...

@luhhlz ahh ... you are adding to the current domination. Thought you had made a new one
What you might do, instead of a separate xml, is to take the current one and make a "gameProperty" that would then allow you to select your modifications as a "Game Option" before game start.
You would then need to change the units folder with the new units as well. A notification at game start explaining how todo it should suffice.
Or you could make a separate game altogether if not all of your modifications will work via gameProperty.
-
My feeling is that unless you are the original designer or authorized by the original designer, you shouldn't change their mod except to correct obvious errors. I have posted many mods that duplicate everything except the XML.
-
Seems bloat-y but I could do dupe everything into a new directory. If that's the preferred method I'll do that.
I'm not modifying any of the original assets or xmls so I don't see why the original owner or map mods could care.
looks like @ssoloff or DanVanAtta could approve it. Maybe they don't want to be in the business of reviewing/approving changes to mods.
-
heh heh ssoloff ain't been around for a long time. Was cool when he was Dan busy these days. Still checks in
Make a new repo at git and make the game separate.
-
@luhhlz I wouldn't call it 1902 just to differentiate it from 1901. It should be called 1902 if it meaningfully depicts the year 1902 instead of the year 1901.
-
honestly I didn't put much thought into it. Like other AA games it tosses out historical accuracy for gameplay balance. I was focused on playability, adding some favored units from people I play with.
The original owners called the first scenario 1900, and 1901 added some more units. I added some more units (mostly unused units already in the directory) so I called mine 1902.
but now that I am thinking more, domination is set in 1890-1914. it has biplane fighters, which were first introduced in like 1915. The description for domination (original authors):
== Domination Alpha== An Anachronistic 20th cnetury scenerio based roughly on the years 1890-1914
So I went more anachronistic than they did, adding stukas (1935) and carriers (1918) and halftracks (1911) and tanks (1917?)
Also I went steampunk, zeppelins can land on carriers (to make them have a role), anyone can buy tanks and Maginots, and long range bombers (1941 if you're US/UK/GER...but many nations don't have long range bombers even today). So it's really just a guilty pleasure map.
My skillset is not in graphics. If it was, I could rename the stukas (and get better models for them, they are all over the place time-wise, the french one looks like a concorde), and make more ww1-looking tanks, and pre-dreadnought versions of battleships, why do the british, ottoman, and chinese infantry look like infantry, while all the other countries' infantry look like conscripts? etc etc

I'm not aware that the original (first) scenario was ever called that. I've always seen it as just "Domination".

@cernel the game file is Domination_1900.xml
I see @Black_Elk maybe worked with surtur, maybe he knows the original authors
also I see a "triplek" is referenced in the game notes from previous versions, I'm just putting together what that must reference, f*** that, I'll remove any reference to him if I make another change
-
@luhhlz yeah you can do whatever you want with it. My lobby handle was triple elk at the time I drew the first map. Someone credited me as 'triplek' in one of the mods that replaced whatever I left hanging, which is annoying. Maybe I was getting trolled, who knows? On the old boards we had a couple incidents like that over the years. Probably cause I'm one of those peeps who said we shouldn't allow some historical flags and symbols in tripleA games that live on the repo. I would make the same case for the battle flag of the army of northern virginia if we were doing it again today, but I guess people already know what I think. For Civil War era games using this map I think the stars and bars would be less fraught, or like any other sort of flag that isn't as charged. One of the ideas initially was just to make a map that would be serviceable for some different eras.
Anyhow please do remove that credit if you get a chance, I'd appreciate it. I'm here to fight Nazi's, and I definitely don't play that white hood crap. I think the OG map could just be scrapped and replaced with whatever badass steampunk version. Like a map that includes that and maybe a time travel element is way more my speed. I have some random Area 51 style graphics too sitting around somewhere if you want to saucer off the deep end hehe.
Anachronous is also misspelt as the first line in the notes currently. It's really not a complete game, I just left it as a draft in case Surtur wanted to revisit. Anything that actually works using this map should supersede whatever original existed. Cause I never finished it and most of the unit graphics are pretty jank. Originally it was going to be Domination 1899, but who cares at this point lol.
I hereby bequeath it to Luhhlz, to fix in any way that seems cool, just do me a favor and credit me as Black Elk.

@luhhlz In earlier versions of TripleA, you could reference another mod without having to import its assets, but that is no longer supported.
