Maps page has thumbnails now

The HTML coding could be better, but we've got some thumbnails on the maps page now:

@lafayette
A great visual addition!Can the bot be run to update the _map folder so it matches all the maps available for download?
-
@lafayette In Sourceforge, Veqryn had the mandatory wideness of 400 pixels for such images. When I uploaded "270BC Wars" (in GitHub), I decided to double on that and have the wideness as 800 pixels.
Am I correct to understand that (as of now) any map-maker can have whatever dimensions for such images?
On this regard, do you think it is advisable to set a suggested or even mandatory wideness for such images as it was the case in the past (now likely at more than 400 pixels)?
-
@lafayette Is the image displayed by "WW2 Oil and Snow 2nd Edition" acceptable? I mean, that is completely different from the consolidated TripleA tradition about these images.

working on it. It's quite unrelated of an effort.
The map image thing was a PR that was just hanging out for months. It was no effort to just say "screw it, this is not perfect, but the map page is a lot better with thumbnails, even if the page loading performance drops"

It's different, but if the map maker wants that for their thumbnail - I don't see that it matters that much.

The target size would be whatever is in the download window. IIRC that window does not resize things, so a large image would look bad and have weird scrolling. I do see the benefit to having a recommended size simply to avoid the question of "how big should this image be?" Beyond that extent, I'm don't see places where it is really that important to be opinionated about it.

@lafayette I was told to upload the images as 1280 x 640.
-
@rogercooper By whom?
I've never heard of a two-dimensional size for such things (only a mandatory wideness back in Veqryn's times as I said). That would make impossible to show a whole map with no distortions unless it is that ratio (in this case, 2:1).
To be clear, what you were supposed to do back in the days was to "Export Gameboard Picture" then shrink it to 400 pixels wideness keeping the aspect ratio.
-
@cernel I don't change the aspect ratio, I just fit the image within 1280 x 640.
-
I remembered these numbers, so 800x500ish

I don't remember why the 800x500 is ideal. I want to say it was because that is a good fit on the download maps window. To some extent, IIRC, the images there are not scaled on the download maps window - so there is no fixed requirement of a specific size.
