PBF/PBEM Settings
-
Hi,
I'm planning to overhaul the PBEM/PBF Settings and wanted to ask how often you are changing your configuration for that.I personally don't ever change my PBEM config at all. I only configured it once and am using that to test this feature.
Because my email doesn't really change I was thinking if it would make sense to move settings that almost never change (I include the default email server and email server settings) into the the settings menu where all the other settings are.
Of course this would only make sense if there aren't any people that change/swap emails very often. So do you think people would want to swap their own email very often?
-
@roiex good idea I don't believe they do often. Perhaps add some "friends" email save slots?
-
One thing after another.
The code to setup all of this is a complete mess, it's already going to be difficult enough to move this single setting somewhere else.
But it will make the code more maintainable in the long run (also another step towards clearly separating UI code from game logic) -
@roiex Personally I have a separate email-address that is dedicated to the dice server mails only. When being asked I always recommend to separate dice mails from "regular" mails. To prevent from using filters or any manual separation, a dedicated email-address appears to be a simple solution. That is why I would welcome a movement to the setting menu.
-
@roiex So I think its best to keep most of the settings together on the PBF/PBEM setup screen. The reason is that for each new game, you need to add your opponents info. It also makes it easier for first time PBF/PBEM users to set it up. So while you don't change your own email very often, putting your own settings separate from your opponents, I think would cause more confusion.
The one thing that could be improved is having the username/passwords save per forum/email provider. Right now if I'm playing a PBF game at A&A.org and here then each save I open I have to enter the credentials for whichever one isn't saved.

I have understood this question related to the own email-address only.
It could be set up in the settings menu and then appear (visible or not) as "predefined" when setting up the game related info (Game-ID, opponent's mail address). -
@Panther That's how I intended it as well.
But I get the point that we probably want to have an option to get someone easily started without having to search this specific setting first.
We really want to give some sort of tooltip or popup to inform new users what they need to do first. -
@panther Yeah, I'm just worried that it'll make it harder to walk new players through setting it up if they need to go one place to put in their info and then another place to put in opponents email.
@RoiEX Yeah, I'd really like to make it more intuitive for new users. Existing users, it tends to matter less as they have their previous info and after you set it up once its not too bad. Maybe doing things like graying out your email in the settings page once you entered it for the first time and have to click on a little pencil icon to edit it again so that its more just info but still easy for first time users. Something that's a little more wizard like or uses terms that less technical users kind of understand would help as well.

@roiex I'm not too sure I understand what you're asking.
-
@scousemart I'm curious if there are people that use more than one email for PbEM.
-
@roiex OK, I get you now.
I use only Gmail for PBEM but I use Outlook for PBF. PBF is for axisandallies.org forum games.
Hope this helps. -
Yeah, I'm only talking about PbEM now.
PbF is a completely different story. -
@roiex Depends what you mean. Many players use a different dice email then email for save games for PBEM. But I don't think either of those would change very often.
-
Yeah, I know, what I wanted to say is that I'm only planning to redo PbEM for now, and focus on PbF later.
Because doing all at once is a way too large task. -
I have a question regarding PBEM/PBF and this seems as good a place as any to ask:
If a game is created using PBF, can it be converted to PBEM?
To clarify, if I start a game in PBF and play a few rounds, then wish to continue as a PBEM, can it be done or are the settings for each game type built in, therefore it's not possible?
Thanks. -
@scousemart Yes. You can open a save game in any mode (lobby, local, pbf, pbem)
