Noticed that my maps are actually displayed at half resolution:

which wouldn't normally bother me but this game uses so much real estate especially on some maps that the side panel doesn't even display much of anything useful without resizing:

My screen is 15.4-inch HDPI (2880 x 1800 equivalent, 3840 x 2400 actual) which is about the same as a 27-inch non HDPI screen i feel like if there was an easy way to fully utilize that resolution it would allow for making that sidebar far more useful. I think maybe my situation isn't all that unique these days.

Anyway, just a thought, don't really know how hard this is. 🙂

You might want to try installing java 12 to check if that works better. Java 9 is supposed to add better HDPI support, but I don't know if that alone is sufficient to fix the issue you're having.
Note that you need to install one of the latest pre-releases to test this, because the version is limited to java 8 for the current stable release https://github.com/triplea-game/triplea/releases

Installing Java 12 seems a bit above my paygrade, but thanks for the suggestion. Can you run both the stable and the development release for triplea or does that cause issues?

You can install both versions at the same time if you install it into a different directory.
Note that the version are completely incompatible with each other, so you won't be able to load savegames stored in the other version or connect to the same game

Also if you're feeling confident with the terminal on Windows you don't actually have to install java to try this.
You can download a zip from here extract it to somewhere and then run something along the lines of C:\path\to\extracted\java\bin\java.exe -jar "C:\Program Files\Path to TripleA\bin\triplea-all-<version>.java" to launch triplea with java 12
Note that I'm not sure if the file names are actually accurate, you'll have to double check. I'm just writing them here from memory.

Do you happen to have homebrew installed on your system?
It makes the whole process a lot easier then.
You just need to run brew cask install java in a terminal to install the latest java version on your system. The triplea installer should now pick up the new version when installing the latest pre-release.
To remove java 12 again you can just run brew cask uninstall java if it turns out to not have the desired effect.

i don't have that and am a bit careful when it comes to monkeying around with my system since i use my computer to make a living (doing designy and video editing type stuff) i'll probably just wait for the supported java release to come out.

Screen real estate has always been a bit of an issue for triplea just thought maybe that was some low hanging fruit since HDPI is so common now. 🙂

If you don't want to risk it, that's completely fine ^^
Brew is really one of the safest approaches though, just saying ^^

@ubernaut You mentioned that you do design editing and video. I am curious if you would be easily able to make a video of a triplea a game for U tube or a video file for here? We were contemplating videos (if possible) of some of the final games in the next Tournament.
