Best ways to Play Long distance

I have a friend in another state. We used to play the board game all the time. I have been playing against the AI with all kinds of A&A variants (and LOTR) for years. But, I have never played long distance except years ago in one of the old A&A websites.

Is playing a forum game easier than hosting a networked game if it is just the two of us? And, can you explain the difference between the two (even though I think I know)

Can we start a game in one form and then continue as PBEM?

Does PBEM work well? I have read a few of the pointers in threads here.

@von_Walrus_44 you can switch between the different ways of playing (local, PBEM/F, live lobby, direct) there is no distinction relative to the save files.

also, PBEM is basically the same as PBF. the only difference is that its a bit more public when you do PBF and it doesn't clog your email box as much (potentially).
