Next step on Map-Making - how to collect feedback?
-
Hello once more
So my map is in a state where i would love to get feedback / bug reports / balancing issues from the community.
Let me explain what the exact status is:
Map is playable by Humans as well as AI.
AI plays quite good, i lost my first two matches
Graphics is just improvised. Its enough to play, recognize the units etc, but missing the fun.
The map in its current state is uploaded to githup in my personal repository, open to public. So my question is:
What should i do next to get some ppl playing my map for feedback etc?
Should i post the path to my public github here somewhere on forum?
Or should i first bring it all to triplea-maps?In the instructions from triplea-maps i read that you should only ask for a repository at their place once the map is finished. Well, mine will take a long way till finished...
Any advice on my next steps?
Thx a lot

In the instructions from triplea-maps i read that you should only ask for a repository at their place once the map is finished. Well, mine will take a long way till finished...In triplea-maps, it would be available easily to all. I don't recall recommending to wait for a map to be complete. I kinda recall the opposite, that development versions were welcome in the maps repository (just take care to not abandon it!)

Also, do you have a thread created for the map in: https://forums.triplea-game.org/category/5/maps-mods
It's a bit of a convention, when a map is started/updated to create a thread there to hold the conversation and build some hype for a map.

@tannenbernie
Summary
Post what you have, on say Google Drive 15GB of free storage that is very easy to share publicly.Serialize your versions, internally they grow in 1s, then I post publicly in units of 5s, 005, 010 etc for download.
Then when its stable/worthy post on GitHub
.
My last two projects I have been very lucky to be a co-author of- Shogun Advanced / The Shogun
- 1941 Global Command Decision (GCD)
Working with two talented graphic artists who produced the visuals and I worked on the non-visual.
The reason for looking at 1941 Global Command Decision is that it had grown organically with lots of public posts.
.
The Map by Black Elk (It started life as a post by another forum member and got morphed
https://forums.triplea-game.org/topic/3315/proposed-map-domination-1941.
The Rest
https://forums.triplea-game.org/topic/3326/1941-global-command-decision-official-threadSo hopefully you will pick up one or two helpers/testers along the way. A warning, It is very tough to get feedback or engagement from the forum readers.

Good suggestions from @TheDog
I think posting "early" or "late" on github depends on how comfortable you are making updates in github after the initial upload.
-
Great, thx for all the feedback.
So i applied for triplea-maps, lets see what they come back with.
Once i have a repository available for everybody, i will create a Post for my map.Cheers,
Bernd -
right on. So you already have a git repo for the map and are just giving triplea permission ?
I think that's how it works now. Just did a new one but can't remember the steps lol
I don't think you need to apply or ask to join, if that's what you meant, anymore.
It'll just auto do it.
Edit
And then you would need to do the map.yaml thing and pull request for it and it'll be downloadable on triplea.Sadly, new maps can't be played on the lobby, so, it'd just be local or pbf/em games.
Hopefully that gets fixed soon. Real good way to advertise your map is in the lobby.
Don't want to overdo it obviously The lobby promo
Edit 2
What's the name of the map ? or repo on git. -
@beelee Hoi beelee
Thats interesting. I am completely new to this github stuff. I have my first version of the map at "https://github.com/Tannenbernie/battleforcraglorn" which should be accesable by public if i understand it right.
As for applying to triplea-maps, i was just following the guide which is posted here in this forum. It says you need to open an issue etc...
Mmmh if this guide is outdated and it woks different now - does anybody know the actual way how to do it? That would help me a lot
Thx and cheers,
Bernd -

Gives me a 404 error, so I guess its a private folder. If you are set on using GitHub you should use GitHub Desktop https://desktop.github.com/
In the long run it will make life using GitHub a lot easier.
After many hours of frustration I came to the conclusion that it is best to have a seperate folder for uploads to GitHub.Meaning, I develop my map in the Downloads folder then when I want to upload it copy it to GitHub_UpLoad folder where it will sync with the cloud version.
As its your first map I would still recommend hosting your first map releases on say Google Drive, its less frustrating. I wanted to spend time on map making rather than fighting with GitHub.
Even now when I think I know what Im doing with GitHub, I will host my first 20+ or so versions on Google Drive and then when I think the map is polished, then post to GitHub.
One reason is the randomness of this file, working.
https://github.com/triplea-game/triplea/blob/master/triplea_maps.yamlPersonally your time is best spent map making, just my 2p.

hmm ... tried to look at a old repo and see what i did but didn't work.
Should be able togo to settings and change it to public. Same as the Dog , i got a 404 too.
It's the wheel looking thingy top right. You probably already no that tho
sometimes you need to scroll down to the bottom to get to it. The change thing
-
Yes i also think now that i will first use another repository as it seems just too timeconsuming to work with github.
I have taken a look at my repository and the screenshot says:
So its "public and visible to anyone" - no idea why you get a 404.
As for github desktop - yes i was using that one. But didnt manage to get an upload running. Even after ssh-key deployment the upload wasnt working. Only Drag- and drop via the browser-gui did work and bring my map in its first repository at gihub.
Well, thx for the many answers and help, i will next look for an alternative repository i guess
-
@tannenbernie can you link to the repo directly ? I still can't find it
Edit
Git is challenging at first but don't give up on it. Post a link to your repo and we will work through it -
-
@Tannenbernie it looks like your github profile might be private or hidden. I'm not sure how you managed that! : )
In your profile settings (https://github.com/settings/profile), check to make sure that your profile & activity are not hidden, like so:
For starters, your profile gives a 404: https://github.com/Tannenbernie
That would be a first thing to fix.
-
This is some really strange stuff.
As posted in the screenshot before, my profile is already public.
And it seems to be public in all settings which i can find.Let me show you some screenshots:
The restrictions are not set:
And the profile is public:
And my Repository is public:
Here also shown public:
Danger Zone says its public:
This is the map url as you can see it in the browser:
Anyone can see me meanwhile?
Helpless Bernd

@tannenbernie
In a browser (Firefox) that I have not signed into GitHub with, this shows my profile
https://github.com/TheDog-GH
(I usually use Chrome)Doing the same for you
https://github.com/Tannenbernie
Does not work
So forget the project for now as we cannot even see your profile. -

Here is a link from my repo https://github.com/triplea-maps/global_40_expansion_uhd_boxes

@Tannenbernie post your link if you want anymore help. Me and Dog have other things todo
