Roger's Scenario Thread
-
Having completed the conversion of all the older scenarios, I am starting a thread specifically to cover my own scenarios and to review existing scenarios. I prefer to play as 1 country against the AI and so I will not review scenarios not playable by AI.
(All of Roger's maps will be pinned at the top of this thread! Feel free to edit or add comments Roger. edited by Prastle)
(Roger's link is located here for all of his vast repository.)
http://www.rogercooper.com/AxisAlliesTriple-AComputerVersion.htmMy first review is of Camp David-1967
Source: Experimental scenarios under Camp David
Gameplay: The units are typical A&A units. The Arabs have higher income and more units. The Israelis have better quality and the central position. The scenario is interesting to play. No victory conditions are defined.
Historicity: The 6 Day War does not mesh well with the strategic focus of A&A. The vital role of air power is lost with traditional A&A combat model. Jordan's lack of strategic depth is shown.Name Age_Of_Sturlungs_0.0.3

@rogercooper A few questions/suggestions:
- Do you have any specific goals or actions based on the reviews? Improving/fixing certain maps? Changing download category for them?
- It would be great if you posted your save game in each post and if you had a small section on how the AI does on the map (things it seems like it can't handle, why it lost, things that it does/doesn't do well).
- Probably should post the map version and the TripleA engine version you are using.
Also, on the note of finishing the conversion of the older maps, are you interesting in getting them added to the official github map repos and downloadable from in-game? It would be great to consolidate everything and if you're are interested you could be the lead map repo admin/reviewer as we could definitely use help improving, reviewing, categorizing, and fixing maps.
-
@redrum @RogerCooper would also make it easier if we wanted to look at perhaps making some slight alterations for maps who's makers have long since gone to pasture. But you or others might still like the map and want to see it improved.
-
@rogercooper For my 270BC variants, then, I suggest playing as Carthage only, since the AI is terrible at that. Just fyi. By 1 country you mean you leave all others as AI allies, I assume.

I just want to highlight some interesting maps. Will leave if to those who run the repository to decide the download category. Most of the maps I have are in the older, simple file arrangement. - It would be great if you posted your save game in each post and if you had a small section on how the AI does on the map (things it seems like it can't handle, why it lost, things that it does/doesn't do well).
I will do that if the AI shows problems - Probably should post the map version and the TripleA engine version you are using.
I am using the latest versions

I will be making some improved maps as well. Generally, I will add victory conditions, alliances and improve balance. I don't like build anywhere maps and will create versions with factories.

I have played other countries and 270BC works fine with the AI playing Carthage.

@rogercooper Cool, thanks for the responses. Though I was trying to get at that we don't have anyone that really runs the repository at the moment so maps pretty much never change category and was trying to offer you the job

@rogercooper
Map Middle Earth-Fords
Download middle_earth_Fords.zip
Game Play Lots of unit types but without much differentiation in practice. Big advantage for Good.
Historicity No Tolkien feel. Unique beings like Wizards, Nazgul, Ents and the like can be built without limit. The Dwarves have cannon. No decisive battles. No race against time.Not worth a replay.

Thanks for the offer, but I have enough projects. I would suggest that Camp David mod be moved to the good area from experimental as it is a polished & complete mod.
-
@rogercooper Agree. Here is the PR to make that upgrade: https://github.com/triplea-game/triplea/pull/3455.
Sorry to hear that. Any assistance is appreciated!
-
@redrum Don't count me out completely. After I complete some current projects, I will reconsider.

@rogercooper
Scenario: The Grand War
Download: The experimental tab in the repository
Description WW2 technology in a fictional world
Good Points- A well-described parallel world
- Nations differ greatly in position and capability
- Maintenance and fuel costs
- Reasonable map size (190 areas) makes for fast turns (AAG40 has 333 areas)
Bad Points
- AI has trouble with some of the special capabilities
- R&D technologies are not described
A scenario definitely worth a try. Once the R&D is described, this should be move to good,
-
@Elreigh See post above for some feedback.
@RogerCooper Probably good to @ the map maker if they have a forum account. Agree that the AI struggles with some of the unique abilities and techs. Regarding R&D technologies, do you mean the technology frequency? As the actual techs themselves do have a decent description.
-
@redrum You are right, I missed the descriptions of technology
-
@rogercooper
Game Blood and Iron
Description World War II on a world map
Download Blood_and_IronGood Points
- Interesting looking map
- Moderate map size makes for fast play
- High unit costs decrease unit density
Bad Points
- No victory conditions
Nothing exceptional, but worth checking out
-
@rogercooper Never really understood why that has never been in download list, but my issue with it, if I recall correctly, is having a single player for all the minors. I just cannot accept that Finland, Romania and Thailand are the same country.

It is a bit odd, but is it any odder than US & China being the same country?

Description13th Century Icelandic Civil War. I added victory conditions
DownloadGood Points
- Unusual historical setting
- Pieces evocative of the Icelandic context (like Rockthrowers)
- The volcanos and mountains of central Iceland restrict movement
Bad Points
- The sides are similar in strength, position and capabilities
- The game uses a basically standard WW2 approach, with no effort made to reflect medieval warfare in general and a war of small raids in particular
- Most units are basically minor variations of infantry.
Worth playing once for historical interest.
-
@rogercooper as a minor thought. Do you mind if I add all links that you post to the top of the thread? Great job btw! Example …
