Future for tripleawarclub.org domain
-
Nevermind then, maybe @LaFayette or @redrum have an idea on what could be done.
-
@RoiEX @ssoloff I can renew it for 1 year for $20.00. BUT @LaFayette and @redrum were the ones that said to not renew it and try to sell or close it... There have been zero offers on Go Daddy for a purchase.
-
@RoiEX No real additional thoughts. If we can't get everything off the old domain then I agree renewing for a year.
-
In a non-compat state we can't get upgraded game clients out to everyone that easily as well. Having a few more weeks and avoiding an emergency release is worth $20. @prastle please do a renewal for a year. We can 'sell' the domain before the expiry when we are ready.

After digging through all the config files I'm almost sure sure that the mail could be migrated by simply modifying the hosts file to use lobby.triplea-game.org or something instead of tripleawarclub.org and to change the "From" email in the MARTI source code accordingly.
@ssoloff I'm not that familiar with how sendmail exactly works, but does my theory sound plausible? -
@RoiEX It's been a long time since I did the MARTI stuff, so I can't really say what's the right way to go here. If I had to guess, I'd say a config-only change makes sense. I don't remember how the MARTI mail relay "proves itself" to the downstream mail relay--if that's done purely through DNS or there's something more substantial like a PKI validation.
-
@ssoloff It has been renewed for another year.
-
@LaFayette and @ssoloff @RoiEX @redrum tripleawarclub domain needs renewal again or do I let it expire?
-
@prastle Thanks for the reminder, there are 2 things that need to be done. AFAIK we need to backport the URL change to 1.9 to ensure that PbEM/PbF games can be ended no problem on that version. That's the easy part and I can create a PR for that this evening.
The other part where we failed last year was figuring out how to change the server MARTI mails are being sent from. It could be the case that it's sufficient to just change the "from" mail but someone would have to "risk it" and fiddle around with production -
@LaFayette You had to deal with mail servers for the current HTTP migration, do you think it's sufficient to just change this line in order to be on safe?

@RoiEX Funny enough, lobby is decoupled pretty strongly from email. How marti+email are set up on the servers is the current and largest systems documentation gap we have. There was zero documentation of any system setup when I took over the servers, that's better now, though as mentioned, marti+email have no documentation to them. I do not know how they work or are configured.
-
@RoiEX more directly, I think chances are good that is safe. We'd probably need to recreate the manual testing that was originally done for marti, ie: set up a test server, deploy the PHP code, hack the client to use the new test server, and verify it works.
-
why are we paying $20+ per year for registration? just curious.
-
Also, i would say the fact that nobody knows how the marti server(s) work should be considered a top priority item. If we don't know how it works, how do we even know if it delivers quality results?
-
Well @ssoloff and myself have a pretty decent overview over the code (this is all the code there is).
The problems of undocumented things really only becomes relevant once we leave our code and start being dependent on system configuration.
This is the case when MARTI calls the mail function, which invokes (we assume from the php documentation) the sendmail tool which then somehow sends a mail to somewhere which somehow lands into a users inbox most of the time. The details in-between are what's missing here.
But I'll try to have a look, maybe it's simpler than it seems and really all we need to do is to adjust the mail address -
@ubernaut said in Future for tripleawarclub.org domain:

Because that's what they charge us for this domain. As long as MARTI still runs on it we need it in order for things to work
-
@RoiEX why don't we transfer it to something cheaper? google, for instance, charges 12 per year and including privacy.
-
I mean this is the only domain we have left there and the original plan was to drop it last year, so renewing it was just meant as a temporary thing
