Curated Best/Top Maps
Below is a list of curated maps to help players pick a map from the 300+ available.
Please suggest ways to make it better.
The list is subjective and some people will not agree with the listings, but something is better than nothing.
The idea is to try and keep it to the best/top 5 maps in each group, (this might change) except the Axis & Allies group
The list is just a starting point and open to change.
.
Emoji and their meaning in the maps
Meant for PvP, Player v Player
Meant for Solo play with a good playing AI, using FastAI or HardAI (more considered, but slower game play)
Has a good looking map
Huge pixel map designed for 2k & 4K screens
More than just a fight. The mapmaker has spent serious time/effort to give immersion/depth/campaign feel

nice work

@thedog some suggestions
-
quality of AI play, even if the map is not made to specifically do player vs AI. Include info on if map has settings which make mechanics more basic to improve AI performance.
-
time to play / complexity ratings. Not sure how this could be measured, probably the time to play the first round through, and the average length of a full game start to finish.
-
basic info on the unit types for purchase in each game
-
basic info on what nations are playable, categories...
Majors: a few large nations (UK, Germany, Japan, USA, USSR, etc) with mids/minors clumped into them (i.e Italy being lumped into Germany in older A&A versions)
.
Mids: Majors plus a few middle powers (Italy, ANZAC, China, etc) also possibly including minor powers that have been clumped together (Puppet_States being combo of FinlandRomaniaHungaryBulgariaVichy, etc)
.
Minors: All sorts of countries playable (Finland, Romania, Thailand, etc) also possibly including even non-country factions (Japan being split between their Army and their Navy in World At War) -
politics information / status of neutrals, categories...
None: Neutrals are same as impassable territories / politics are pretty much unchanging
.
Basic: Single-type Neutrals, invadable by either side / politics changes based on triggers/conditions
.
Intermediate: G40-style multi-type Neutrals, some Pro-Axis/Alllied. Politics has some player interaction but is largely a sideshow
.
Complex: More varied neutrals, possibly even "neutral powers" that can be brought on side with politics (TWW style). Politics is a major and integral part of the gameplay

@joseph-prince
The reason for this thread is because Map Tags are not going to be implemented anytime soon.
https://forums.triplea-game.org/topic/2801/map-tags-for-release-2-6/19Map Tags has 109+ posts and maybe/finally had a consensus.
However, this thread is my attempt to give players a head start on the 300+ maps and give them a starting point in their favoured period, then they can make up their minds on what they like.
I might add a few more Emojis, suggestions welcome, to group maps, but wanted to keep the current white space for text, like Age of Tribes.

Good call and I have expanded it -

@thedog You might want to add Greyhawk Wars to the Fantasy section.

Never played either, but why Ultimate Pants and not Ultimate War? Besides, are you sure that deserves being considered top quality? I don't remember having ever seen anyone playing Ultimate Pants in the lobby...
-
@cernel The different Ultimate scenarios are fairly similar, I am not sure which is the best.

@rogercooper I feel that Ultimate World (as well as its variants) is very much belonging to the old times of TripleA and is no longer any popular. I wouldn't have it in top quality also since it has playability issues due to the very small and very crowded territories and the small units, which are sometimes hard to tell apart especially in case of some sea units (now even more serious an issue as we move to 4K monitors). On top of that, it is such a wildly unhistorical game (even by TripleA standards) to have in any historical category. Mostly, I'm feeling that World At War made Ultimate World substantially obsolete: seemingly, Ultimate World players moved to World At War after the latter existed, so having the conceptually very similar Ultimate World and World At War on the same standing does not feel quite right to me in the moment the latter is something like a hundred or maybe even a thousand times more popular than the former as a matter of game played in the lobby. Besides, if there is not a clear best scenario, I think that it would be reasonable the most to have the original one (rather than any variant unless the variant is clearly better).
For example, Big World (comprising at least a couple variants, like the sometime somewhat popular NekahNet's 1939), Big World 2 and even the scantly played Pact of Steel (just to cite a bunch of global WW2 games) are definitely more popular than Ultimate World (or any one of its variants) in the lobby, and I'm not even sure that those deserve to be at the top.
