      I know it is inappropriate to ask them in this forum but I am really desperate to find the answers.

      Failing Upwards: To advance in one's career despite failures.

      I am looking for the opposite verb or idiom of it. It should be as short as possible. It can be composition of made-up words too or from another lanuages.

      Verzetteln: Means bogged down in unimportant things in German as far as I understood. Any word for being bogged down in inportant things?

      One Step Forward, Two Step Back: "You make progress but then experience events that cause you to be further behind than you were when you made the progress." Any alternative and shorter phrase of it?

        @schulz can't win for losing maybe for the first one.
        lost in the weeds maybe for the second one.

        3rd one's a bit tougher maybe going up the down escalator

          I certainly do not believe "Player Help" is the right section for this. I'm thinking to move this to "Mapmaking". @LaFayette, what do you think?

          "Pyrrhic victory".

          "to be involved/embroiled in".

          One Step Forward, Two Step Ahead: "You make progress but then experience events that cause you to be further behind than you were when you made the progress." Any alternative and shorter phrase of it?

          (assuming you meant "one step forward, two steps backward") "outmatched gains", "a progress followed and outmatched by a reversal of fortunes".

            I'm not sure about what that means, yet I'll point out that @Schulz asked for a word (or idiom) for being mired in important things.

              @cernel

              Pyrrhic victory is slighlt different thing unfortunately because the main goal is still achieved and the huge losses could neutralize the gain at best.

              I was rather looking for a idiom or verb that to describe this: To overall descent in one's career or position despite (small) successes.

              Yes it should have been "One Step Forward, Two Step Back"

              I would prefer a cool phrase even prefer made up words/idioms.

                    @cernel it means getting caught up in the details doesn't really imply the importance of said details at least the way i always use it. 😛
