Axis and Allies Europe (1999) map in TripleA
-
First public post on this website.
I am a YouTuber for Axis and Allies canon games. I use this wonderful platform, TripleA, to pressure test tactics and strategies before presenting them in online videos.
I also pay my respects by making a monthly automatic donation.
I'm currently moving into a detailed analysis of original Europe (1999) and original Pacific (2000). This involves playing a great many games against many different opponents. Both modules are currently available on TripleA but suffer from incongruencies with the actual rules of the game. Here is a short list of the issues with the Europe version:
- SBR escort/interceptor rules are incorrect
- Submarines rules are incorrect
- Middle East money is allocated to the British when it should not be (barring programing changes, this should just be disabled)
- Allied units in Russia automatically convert to Russian at the end of the player turn when they should not be (barring programing, this should just be disabled)
- SBR damage is limited to the IPC value of the territory when it should be unlimited
These incongruencies make the game very difficult to play via TripleA without a great many EDITS and independent dice rolls done outside of TripleA (e.g. anytime submarines are involved). In order to stack games with my followers and give this version the analysis (I feel) it deserves, I would like to request an update. I understand this takes time and effort. I am willing to make a respectable donation if it can be done. Gratitude for any developer's personal time in this regard will also not go unappreciated, just DM me. If I need to queue up for this request, just let me know where/how to do that. Many thanks.
Respectfully,
The Good Captain

@the_good_captain The best place to report incorrect rules tends to be the bug queue: https://github.com/triplea-game/triplea/issues/new/choose
This post is fine place to discuss the details of what is wrong and what should change instead before posting a problem report.
-
@lafayette I feel like the bug queue is a place to report issues with the platform, not rules incongruencies on a specific map. I'm saying this based on the questions it asks you before you post...

@the_good_captain We simply want clean write ups of problems. If someone posts, "TWW is broken for subs", it takes a very long time to determine what and how. There is not that much time for maintainers where we can do that. Instead we need cases like "check out this save game, fight the sub battle, notice how subs can do X, because of Y, they should instead do Z"
It can be sometimes hard to know what is a problem due to the XML config of a game (in the map makers control) vs what is part of the game engine. I suspect any behavior around subs is probably going to be in the latter.

@lafayette understood. will comply

@lafayette Does this look acceptable? Please advise how I can improve if not. Thank you again my dude.

What's the EXACT name in TripleA of the map you're using? I'm having trouble finding it, and there's soooo many different versions of them.
-
- SBR escort/interceptor rules are incorrect
What is the specific issue? - Submarines rules are incorrect
What is the specific issue? - Middle East money is allocated to the British when it should not be (barring programing changes, this should just be disabled)
This cannot be easily changed. I am not sure what you mean by disabled. - Allied units in Russia automatically convert to Russian at the end of the player turn when they should not be (barring programing, this should just be disabled)
This can be fixed. - SBR damage is limited to the IPC value of the territory when it should be unlimited
This can be fixed easily
Why this interest in AAE strategy? The Germans have an easy win by building all infantry/artillery on the first 2 turns, all tanks on turns 3&4 and take Moscow on turn 6. The game is broken OOB.
- SBR escort/interceptor rules are incorrect

@zlefin If you've already installed it, its called "Europe - Alpha". If the map has not been installed, I think its just called "Europe" and its under the experimental tab. After its successfully downloaded there are two versions available to play, "Europe -Alpha" which is the one closest to out-of-box and "Europe - Alpha v3 Rules".
If you still can't find it, let me know and I will take photos and post here.

Answers to specific issues are posted in the link above, here it is again: https://github.com/triplea-game/triplea/issues/9552

The bug report looks good. Thank you for submitting it. It might be some time before it is resolved, though it being detailed will help improve the odds it is fixed (maybe someone new will look for a new issue to pick up and would choose that).
-
@lafayette many thanks. I will submit the Pacific bug report in the same fashion in a few days (it's similar with subs and SBRs). Thank you for your help.

@RogerCooper @LaFayette many thanks to you dudes. I hear @RogerCooper gave Europe a tune up. I have thrown a donation into the hat for the work. Here is the Pacific bug report:
https://github.com/triplea-game/triplea/issues/9584
I imagine this one will be a bit tougher. I have no illusions as to what can be done or by when. I am content with putting it in the hopper.
I have a much smaller/simpler bug report for Anniversary '41 and '42 as well as Classic coming next.
Your work is all very much appreciated.

@the_good_captain There is some reluctance on the part of the moderators to load new material based upon boardgames to the github report so I am just posting here.Europe.zip
-
@rogercooper And here Pacific_Beta.zip
-
@rogercooper And the very imperfect port of Axis & Allies: 1914. world_war_i_1914.zip

@rogercooper thanks! what's the best way to make these maps function via TripleA

I doubt there can really be reluctance to update a map which is already available if you meant to change (fix) the map rather than adding an other one. Maybe there has been some misunderstanding.
Since the title of this topic seems to be generally about the map, I shall say that I find the existence of a Belorussia territory bordering (among others) all of Leningrad, Moscow and Stalingrad to be a very poor drawing choice, lowering the value of this map, on my opinion, so much that I'm surprised anyone likes it. In particular, I believe that possibly having the same units being able to "siege" both Leningrad and Stalingrad at the same time (!) is unacceptably degrading of strategic meaning for a map of this scope.
As a comparison, "World War II Europe 1940 2nd Edition" has 3 territories between Novgorod (Leningrad) and Volgograd (Stalingrad), though, in this map, you have 2 territories between Leningrad and Moscow and only 1 territory between Moscow and Stalingrad, whereas the distances between these cities are respectively 634km (Leningrad-Moscow) and 866km (Moscow-Stalingrad). In this case, distorting distances about twice over in favour of the northern part of the Soviet front is particularly absurd for a WW2 map, considering how much more important the south was.

I have always though Belorussia and Ukraine should be divided and Germany need to get a Romanian factory.

@cernel The AAE game has many problems, but it is fun to play Russia as a human with all other powers being AI. My objective was to come as close to the boardgame as possible. AAE40 is a better, Europe-only game.
@Schulz Your ideas are good. Make the mod.
