map making questions

@Hepps Okay, thanks. Can I assume that the reliefs are just how the map displays the terrain effects? And hence are just visual and not actually affecting game play themselves, as the part that affects the play is the label of mountainous, hill, etc.?
I don't know if i worded that well.
-
@ff03k64 You are correct. And yes you worded it well.
The visuals on the map themselves I did purely as reliefs.
The actual gameplay effects are derived from territory attachments inside the xml.

@Hepps @beelee @redrum @Cernel
Thanks for all your responses so far!
Looking at TWW some more, I think it is a little bigger than I want to go with. Any suggestions for other whole world maps that are smaller? I looked at WWIIv3, but i think slightly bigger would be nice. Or at least splitting India and Germany into 2-3 territories each. Maybe Brazil as well. Would that be very difficult/possible?
And then using the currently impassable terrain. I assume making them passable is an XML edit?
Thanks again!

@ff03k64 Splitting a territory isn't necessarily hard... there just a series of things you need to do.
And yes the impassable territories is a matter of removing that from the terr. attachment in the xml.
-
@Hepps Is there a guide or wiki or anything? I can figure out xml stuff by going through it. But that seems like it wouldn't be in the POS xml.

@ff03k64 The mapmaking tutorials used to be here:
https://github.com/triplea-game/triplea/tree/master/docs/map_makingNow I cannot find them anymore...
@redrum etc. Am I missing them or have they been moved. Where are they now?

Now the documents are part of the "Wiki":

@Panther they moved everything to wiki a day or two ago. It is a recent GitHub thing.

Does one of those pages say how to edit a map? I see how to create one, though i would need the outline of a map to do that.
-
@ff03k64 Well, in the moment they tell you how to make a map, they also tell you how to remake it. For the specific question, I could link you every single one of them, as editing a map means everything. The main division is depending if you want to edit the skin only or you want to edit the game (xml) only. Basically, if you want to change how it looks or you want to change how it plays.

If you are looking for list of world maps, see TripleA World Maps

@ff03k64 If you find a map that works for you... just tell us which one. From there I'm sure we can walk you through the steps required to make the changes you want for your game.

@RogerCooper Thanks
-
@Cernel The only thing is that for making a map i need the outline of the map. I was hoping/wondering if it is possible to just edit a map without that. If not, are the outlines that I would need to adjust in the zip file somewhere?
-
@ff03k64 If you choose a map... I can guide you through the process pretty quickly.
-
@Hepps Choosing the map is half the problem! Maybe more than that actually. And the more that I think about it, the more I think I am better off just finding a map that is the right size and making my basic game on that, and then get the map to look right once I have things mostly figured out, or at least kind of figured out.
Right now I am leaning towards the WWIIv3 map (AA50 map?). I want a few countries to be split into 2 or 3, and things like Russia and Chine to be compressed into 3 or 4 i guess. Unless someone can find me a better map, I am going to use that one to get my game started, and then actually get the map right later on.
So hopefully I can pester your for help in a few weeks or months.

@ff03k64 If you want to have the details, I would say Big World is at least better than v3/anniversary.
If you only want the base, then why not TWW? Another good one would be Global War.

@ff03k64 Take a look at this scenario 2013_Conflict. The scenario has modern boundaries and contemporary unit art.
