              Well. Dan hasn't moved for a few days. Hope he's allright. Pretty sure he wasn't planning on spending his vacation in the Quad-Cities.

              That place blows big time.

                    well, been 5 or 6 days of no movement. His longest stretch of the trip.

                    Maybe he's waiting to see when the road to Ashville is gonna open up 🙂

                      Heard back from Dan. He was taking a break in Davenport to rest up and replace his back tire, but he has Family near Asheville and decided to ditch the bike and get a rental.

                      Hauled a bunch of diapers and canned goods out there and is helping with the cleanup.

                      Way to go Dan ! Good Sam award for you 🙂

                          Dan is back on his bike and pedaling away ! Coming up on Packwood. Screaming views of Rainier from there.

                          He'll have a tough climb getting over the pass, I think it's White Pass, but I can't remember but then all downhill to Wenatchie.

                          Where will he go from there ?

                          I say go North and then cross over the North Cascades again 🙂

                          Or maybe he hits Tonasket ? Back to Canada ?

                          Stay tuned and safe pedaling Dan 🙂

                              Looks as if Dan is headed South. He's in the Wilderness for the longest Day of the Year 🙂

                                Well Dan's trip may be done or he's just hitching a ride. Saw where he's on a train now.

                                Was hoping he wasn't gonna try and brutalize through Portland. That could be a little risky traffic wise.

                                Maybe he hops on 101 and finishes up but that's kinda risky too 🙂

                                At any rate, he got a close up look of the Columbia, both up and downstream. The highlight was probably camping by St Helens I would think.

                                Anyway, safe travel for the Home Stretch 🙂

                                  @beelee Thanks for following!

                                  Camping by St Helens turned out to have been cold. With bivvy sacks, you want to be really sure to shoot your breath out of the bag. Over the course of the night I moved and started breathing into the bivvy bag, woke up cold with a wet sleeping bag. The milky way was out! Which was cool, but so the air at elevation and insulation that was no longer insulating. I McGyver'ed it a bit, underneath my sleeping pad I've 1/8" foam pad, looks like a yoga mat, I put that between the sleeping bag and bivy - creating an important air gap that meant the night air was no longer pulling heat directly off the insulation compromised sleeping bag.

                                  That overall day and the next was good riding, I hadn't done much of the Gifford forest before. Great gravel, camp anywhere, lots of available water. Had some good views of Adams, only saw Helens once though (it's can be a tough one to see). Certainly fed a couple dozen mosquitos, but all part of the turf.

                                  The gorge was pretty great. Was hot AF in there though, 90s+; went through 6 liters of water and another one or two of milk/soda/gatorade. Good riding though.

                                  Portland turned into the end of the trip, had an easy last day into town, hung out and gorged on various food and then caught an early train back. Always a bit bittersweet wrapping up a trip. Was thinking to head to the coast, but the heat and the crossing over to the coast proper would have been a bit 'meh' compared to the prior riding. I did scratch a pretty good itch though 🙂

                                    @LaFayette

                                    Right On. Glad you had a good trip. Yea I've heard of people making a snorkel out of a old sock and breathing through that . I've never tried it.

                                    My bivy doesn't have a hood. I'd just wear a stocking cap and My scarf. Scarf would be frozen in the morning but as long as it wasn't a downpour, I'd be ok. Top of bag would get a little damp but dry out quick enough.

                                    Some days would have to find a laundramat though and throw it in the dryer 🙂

                                      @beelee love the idea of the sock snorkel. IMO bivvy + tarp is the play. We're not likely to get rain out here until September, didn't even bring a rain coat!
